Seoul to Sokcho 2026: Bus Guide, Terminals, Tickets & Travel Time

Foreign travelers taking a bus from Seoul to Sokcho South Korea

Planning a trip from Seoul to Sokcho in 2026? For most international travelers, a direct bus is still the easiest and most practical way to reach Sokcho, the East Sea coast and Seoraksan National Park.

The journey itself is simple. The confusing part is the terminals.

Seoul has more than one bus terminal serving Sokcho, and Sokcho has both an Express Bus Terminal and an Intercity Bus Terminal. Choosing the right combination can save you time, especially if you already know where you are staying.

This guide explains the main Seoul-to-Sokcho bus options, travel time, ticket booking, the difference between Sokcho's two terminals, and how to continue to Seoraksan after you arrive.

Quick answer:
For most travelers, take a direct bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal or Dong Seoul Bus Terminal. Allow roughly 2–3 hours depending on the service and traffic. Always check which Sokcho terminal is shown on your ticket.

Which Seoul to Sokcho Bus Should You Take?

There are two main starting points that foreign travelers are likely to use.

Departure Best For Important Detail
Seoul Express Bus Terminal Gangnam, Seocho and southern Seoul Commonly used for services arriving at Sokcho Express Bus Terminal
Dong Seoul Bus Terminal Jamsil, Seongsu, Konkuk University and eastern Seoul Services can use either Sokcho terminal, so check your ticket carefully

Option 1: Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Sokcho

Travelers boarding an express bus in Seoul for a trip to Sokcho

If you are staying around Gangnam, Seocho or southern Seoul, Seoul Express Bus Terminal is often the easiest departure point.

Direct express buses connect the Seoul area with Sokcho Express Bus Terminal.

Sokcho's official tourism information says the Seoul–Sokcho route uses the Seoul–Yangyang corridor and Misiryeong area, making Sokcho reachable from Seoul in the two-hour range under favorable conditions.

For trip planning, however, I would allow around 2 to 3 hours. Traffic leaving Seoul, weekends, autumn foliage season and Korean holidays can all make the journey longer.

One big advantage of this route is where you arrive.

Sokcho Express Bus Terminal is very close to Sokcho Beach. Sokcho city describes it as roughly five minutes from the beach area, making it convenient if your accommodation is near the coast.

How to Get to Seoul Express Bus Terminal

Seoul Express Bus Terminal is connected to Express Bus Terminal Station, making it straightforward to reach by subway from many parts of Seoul.

If this is your first time using public transportation in the city, read our:

How to Use the Seoul Subway: Foreigner Guide

Give yourself extra time inside the terminal. Large Seoul bus terminals can have multiple buildings, ticket counters and boarding areas, so arriving just a few minutes before departure is not a good idea.

Option 2: Dong Seoul Bus Terminal to Sokcho

Dong Seoul Bus Terminal can be more convenient if you are staying around Jamsil, Seongsu, Konkuk University or the eastern side of Seoul.

The terminal is located next to Gangbyeon Station on Seoul Subway Line 2.

Sokcho's official tourism information lists Dong Seoul connections for both Sokcho Express Bus Terminal and Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal.

That means one important rule:

JAY TIP:
Do not assume every Dong Seoul → Sokcho bus arrives at Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal. Check the exact destination terminal printed on the service you book.

For the intercity route, Sokcho's tourism information describes the journey between Sokcho and Dong Seoul at around 2 hours 10 minutes under normal conditions.

Real travel time can still vary with traffic, weather and the exact service.

Seoul Express Bus Terminal or Dong Seoul?

For most travelers, I would not cross Seoul just to use one terminal instead of the other.

Choose the terminal that is easiest to reach from your hotel, then compare the available departure times.

If you are staying around Gangnam or southern Seoul, Seoul Express Bus Terminal usually makes more sense.

If you are staying around Jamsil, Seongsu or eastern Seoul, Dong Seoul may save you a long subway trip across the city.

Where to Book Seoul to Sokcho Bus Tickets

Korea uses different booking systems depending on the type of long-distance bus.

Intercity Bus Tickets

Use the official TxBus / Tmoney Intercity Bus Reservation System:

TxBus – Official Intercity Bus Booking

An English interface is available, which makes it one of the better options for international travelers.

Express Bus Tickets

For express bus services, check:

KOBUS – Official Express Bus Booking

Do this before traveling:
Check the live booking system for your exact date. Bus schedules, fares and available vehicle classes can change, so an old timetable screenshot is less reliable than the current reservation system.

Sokcho Has Two Bus Terminals

Foreign travelers arriving in Sokcho by long distance bus

This is the detail that causes the most confusion for first-time visitors.

Sokcho Express Bus Terminal

Sokcho Express Bus Terminal is located at:

Gangwon State, Sokcho-si, Donghae-daero 3994

It is very close to Sokcho Beach, so it is particularly convenient if you are staying around the coast.

Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal

Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal is located at:

Gangwon State, Sokcho-si, Jang-an-ro 16

It is farther north than the Express Bus Terminal and can be more convenient for some downtown accommodation and central Sokcho destinations.

Before booking your hotel, compare your accommodation location with the terminal shown on your bus reservation.

A property described as being near a “Sokcho bus terminal” may be close to one terminal but not the other.

Where Should You Stay in Sokcho?

For a first visit, there are two especially useful accommodation strategies.

Stay Near Sokcho Beach

This works well if you want easy access to the coast, restaurants and the Express Bus Terminal.

It is also a good choice if your Sokcho trip combines the mountain with a relaxed afternoon or evening near the sea.

Stay Closer to Seoraksan

If your main purpose is hiking, staying closer to Seoraksan can make an early start much easier.

When I visited, accommodation closer to the mountain felt relatively affordable compared with what I expected, although prices can change significantly depending on weekends, foliage season and Korean holidays.

How to Get from Sokcho to Seoraksan

If Sokcho is only the first stop and your real destination is Seoraksan National Park, you can continue from the city by local bus or taxi.

Sokcho's current bus information system lists Bus 7 and Bus 7-1 as services heading toward Seoraksan Sogongwon.

Schedules can differ by day and operator, so check the live Sokcho bus system before leaving.

Planning to Hike Ulsanbawi?

If you are going to Sokcho mainly for Seoraksan, do not stop with the transport planning.

Our complete Sokcho and Seoraksan guide explains:

  • how to reach Seoraksan from Sokcho
  • Ulsanbawi hiking distance and difficulty
  • the difference between Ulsanbawi and the Seoraksan cable car
  • the best seasons for the trip
  • where to stay
  • what to eat after hiking
  • my own experience hiking Ulsanbawi as a beginner

Important: The Seoraksan Cable Car Does Not Go to Ulsanbawi

This is worth understanding before you build your itinerary.

The Seoraksan cable car goes toward Gwongeumseong.

It does not carry you to Ulsanbawi.

If you want to reach the main Ulsanbawi viewpoint, you need to hike.

That distinction can completely change how much time you need at Seoraksan.

Can You Take a Train from Seoul to Sokcho in 2026?

Not currently.

As of September 2026, there is no direct passenger rail service operating between Seoul and Sokcho.

The Chuncheon–Sokcho East-West railway project is under construction. Sokcho city currently lists the construction project period as running through 2027.

Because major infrastructure schedules can change, I would not plan a future trip around a specific opening date until passenger service is officially announced.

For travel in 2026, the direct bus remains the practical public-transport option from Seoul.

Can You Visit Sokcho as a Day Trip from Seoul?

Yes, but whether you should depends on what you want to do.

A simple Sokcho coast trip can work as a long day trip.

Trying to combine Seoul → Sokcho → Ulsanbawi hike → Sokcho food → coast → Seoul in one day is much less appealing.

If Ulsanbawi is part of your plan, I strongly prefer at least one night in Sokcho.

A more comfortable itinerary is:

  • Day 1: Seoul → Sokcho, coast, market or local food
  • Day 2: Early Seoraksan start → Ulsanbawi or cable car → return to Sokcho

This gives you much more flexibility if the mountain takes longer than expected.

How Early Should You Book a Seoul to Sokcho Bus?

On an ordinary weekday, you may find plenty of departures.

But demand can be very different during:

  • weekends
  • Korean public holidays
  • long holiday periods
  • Seoraksan autumn foliage season
  • popular summer travel weekends

If your date is fixed, reserving ahead is the safer approach.

My Recommended Seoul to Sokcho Plan

For a first-time foreign traveler, I would choose the Seoul departure terminal based on the location of the hotel rather than chasing a specific bus terminal across the city.

Take a morning bus, arrive in Sokcho around late morning or early afternoon, leave your luggage at the hotel and enjoy the coast.

Then start Seoraksan early the next morning.

That gives you enough time for the mountain without turning the entire trip into a race against the return bus.
