Korea Fall Foliage: Peak Dates, Best Places & Easy Routes
If you are coming to Korea for autumn leaves, the most important thing is not choosing the “best” mountain. It is matching your travel dates to the part of Korea that is actually changing color.
Korea’s official tourism site published the latest fall foliage forecast on September 8, 2026. The forecast puts Seoraksan first, followed later by Bukhansan, Jirisan, Naejangsan and Hallasan.
When will Korea’s fall foliage peak?
The forecast below is the current national planning reference. Weather can still move the actual color by several days, so use it to choose a region—not to promise yourself one perfect tree on one perfect date.
| Destination | First foliage | Expected peak | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seoraksan | Oct 3 | Oct 25 | Best early major mountain |
| Bukhansan | Oct 23 | Nov 4 | Easy mountain option from Seoul |
| Jirisan | Oct 28 | Nov 5 | Southern mountain trip |
| Naejangsan | — | Nov 11 | Classic late-season maple destination |
| Hallasan | Oct 31 | Nov 13 | Late foliage + Jeju trip |

Korea’s weather service defines the start of foliage at roughly 20% color from the top of the mountain, while peak foliage means roughly 80% color. So a “first foliage” date can still look much greener than the autumn photos you saved on Instagram.
Where should you go for your actual travel dates?
This is the part I would use to plan the trip.
A traveler arriving October 20 should not build the same foliage route as someone arriving November 10. Korea’s autumn moves south and downhill over time. The smarter move is to keep your flights and hotels, then choose the region that matches your dates.
Best fall foliage spots if you are staying in Seoul
You do not need a mountain day trip to enjoy Korean autumn. VISITKOREA currently highlights Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seoul Forest, Olympic Park and N Seoul Tower as popular foliage spots inside the city.
Best when you want autumn scenery without leaving central Seoul. Go early for softer light and fewer tour groups.
Easy to combine with Seongsu cafés, so it works well when foliage is a bonus rather than the whole purpose of the day.
Choose this when you want a city panorama plus autumn color instead of a flat park walk.
My rule for Seoul is simple: if you only have one free afternoon, do not burn three hours on transfers just because a place outside the city is more famous.
Easy autumn day trips from Seoul
VISITKOREA also recommends Hwadam Botanic Garden, Nami Island and The Garden of Morning Calm outside Seoul. These are easier for travelers who want designed landscapes and photography without committing to a serious mountain hike.
Hwadam Botanic Garden
Hwadam is one of the easiest answers when you want a highly curated autumn landscape near Seoul. The trade-off is popularity: autumn dates can be much harder to secure than an ordinary weekday visit.
If you want to turn Hwadam into a larger regional trip rather than just a one-stop day tour, use our Gwangju–Icheon–Yeoju 3-day road trip.
If Hwadam is your priority and you do not want to manage transport on your own, compare the current Seoul-departure tour options and available dates.
Check Hwadam Tour Availability →Nami Island + Garden of Morning Calm
This combination is easier than Seoraksan if nobody in your group wants a mountain day. Nami Island gives you the iconic tree-lined paths, while the Garden of Morning Calm adds a slower landscaped-garden experience.
I would choose this for families, couples and travelers who care more about autumn atmosphere than hiking.
A better fit than a mountain day if your group wants autumn scenery with lighter walking and simple transfers.
Compare Nami Island Day Tours →Seoraksan: the big early-season choice
If you are specifically flying to Korea for mountain foliage, Seoraksan is the first place I would watch. The 2026 forecast gives it an expected peak around October 25.
But do not confuse “visit Seoraksan” with “hike Ulsanbawi.” You can choose a lighter mountain day, use the cable car area, or commit to a proper hike depending on your fitness and weather.
Our complete Sokcho & Seoraksan guide covers Seoul-to-Sokcho transport, where to stay, the cable car, Ulsanbawi and what to eat afterward.
Useful if you want a Seoul-departure foliage trip without arranging intercity buses, local transfers and return timing yourself. Check which seasonal route is operating on your travel date.

A November arrival does not automatically mean you missed Korea’s fall. The 2026 forecast puts Naejangsan at November 11 and Hallasan at November 13 for expected peak foliage.
Naejangsan
Naejangsan is one of Korea’s classic maple destinations and makes much more sense for a later autumn trip than forcing a past-peak northern mountain.
Hallasan, Jeju
Hallasan’s forecast is later again, with first foliage around October 31 and peak around November 13. This is the option for travelers who already want Jeju and can build a full island trip around the season.
Bulguksa, Gyeongju
If you want heritage rather than a mountain hike, VISITKOREA also recommends Bulguksa Temple in Gyeongju as a major autumn destination. This is a different kind of foliage day: temple architecture, stone paths and fall color rather than a summit.
How to check the real foliage before you leave
This is the step I would do 48–72 hours before a mountain day.
Korea Meteorological Administration: Famous Mountain Foliage Status.
Peak foliage also means peak crowds
The prettiest weekend can also be the least pleasant day to travel. Mountain access roads, parking areas, cable cars and popular gardens can all become bottlenecks during peak foliage.
For Seoraksan in particular, reserve long-distance transport early when your date is fixed. Our Seoul to Sokcho bus guide explains the practical terminal choices and why foliage weekends need more buffer.
Which autumn trip fits you?
| You want... | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| No day trip | Seoul parks + palaces | Easy, flexible, low transport risk |
| Pretty photos, light walking | Hwadam / Nami / Morning Calm | Designed landscapes close to Seoul |
| Big mountain scenery | Seoraksan | Best-known early major peak |
| Late autumn maples | Naejangsan | Later November timing |
| Autumn + island trip | Hallasan / Jeju | Latest headline peak in this forecast |
| Heritage + foliage | Bulguksa / Gyeongju | Temple atmosphere without summit hiking |
For late October, I would watch Seoraksan. For early November, Seoul/Bukhansan and Jirisan become much more interesting. For a later trip, Naejangsan and Hallasan keep the season going.
Use the forecast to choose a region, then check the live foliage photos and weather shortly before you travel. That is a much safer plan than booking an entire Korea itinerary around one predicted “peak day.”
