Sokcho & Seoraksan Guide 2026: Ulsanbawi Hike & Transport

Ulsanbawi granite peaks in Seoraksan National Park near Sokcho South Korea

Sokcho feels completely different from Seoul.

On one side, you have the East Sea, seafood restaurants and beaches. On the other, the granite peaks of Seoraksan National Park rise behind the city.

If nature is the reason you are visiting Sokcho, one place deserves special attention: Ulsanbawi Rock.

I hiked Ulsanbawi myself even though I was a beginner. The final climb was tiring, but I was able to reach the top at my own pace. What surprised me most was not the stairs — it was how powerful the wind could become around the exposed summit.

This guide is designed to help you plan the entire trip rather than simply tell you that Ulsanbawi is beautiful.

How to Get From Incheon Airport to Sokcho

Foreign travelers arriving in Sokcho from Seoul and Incheon Airport for a Seoraksan trip

One of the biggest mistakes travelers can make is assuming they must enter Seoul before traveling to Sokcho.

You may not need to.

As of August 31, 2026, direct intercity buses operate from both Incheon Airport Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 to Sokcho.

Incheon Airport Terminal 2 → Sokcho

Departure Approx. Arrival Journey Adult Fare

13:4017:10About 3 hr 30 min₩36,400
15:4019:10About 3 hr 30 min₩36,400

The service generally runs:

Terminal 2 → Terminal 1 → Gimpo Airport → Yangyang → Sokcho.

There are only a few departures each day, so always check your exact date before building a flight connection around this timetable.

Check current Incheon Airport → Sokcho bus seats on TxBus

JAY Pick: Take the Direct Airport Bus If Your Flight Timing Works

If your flight lands early enough and you have enough time for immigration, baggage collection and getting to the bus stop, I would seriously consider the direct bus.

Traveling into central Seoul only to leave Seoul again for Sokcho creates an unnecessary extra journey.

The problem is the limited schedule.

If you arrive after the final Sokcho bus, Seoul becomes the practical backup.

In that situation, use JAY's Incheon Airport to Seoul guide to compare AREX, airport buses, taxis and private transfers.

How to Get From Seoul to Sokcho in 2026

There is still no direct passenger railway between Seoul and Sokcho in August 2026.

A new railway connection is under construction, but for a trip today the practical choices are still:

  • direct bus
  • rental car

For most visitors, I would take the bus.

Option 1: Dong Seoul Terminal → Sokcho

Dong Seoul Terminal is beside Gangbyeon Station on Seoul Subway Line 2.

This is usually convenient if you are staying around:

  • Jamsil
  • Seongsu
  • eastern Seoul
  • areas with an easy Line 2 connection

Direct journeys are typically around the low-two-hour range depending on the exact service and destination terminal.

Schedules and bus classes vary, so search your exact date rather than copying an old timetable.

Search Dong Seoul → Sokcho on TxBus

Option 2: Seoul Express Bus Terminal → Sokcho

If you are staying in Gangnam, Banpo or southern Seoul, Seoul Express Bus Terminal can be much easier.

Services generally take around two to two-and-a-half hours depending on traffic and the specific departure.

Check Seoul → Sokcho express bus tickets on KOBUS

Do I Need to Reserve the Seoul Subway?

No.

There is no subway reservation involved.

The Seoul subway only gets you to the bus terminal. You normally tap in and out using a transportation card such as T-money.

If Korean public transportation is new to you, read:

How to Use the Seoul Subway

and:

JAY's T-money Card Guide

Which Seoul Terminal Should You Choose?

My rule is simple:

Eastern Seoul → Dong Seoul.

Gangnam / southern Seoul → Seoul Express Bus Terminal.

Do not cross the entire city because someone online said one terminal is universally better.

The best terminal is the one that makes your complete journey shorter.

Know This Before Arriving: Sokcho Has More Than One Bus Terminal

Travelers often see the words "Sokcho Bus Terminal" and assume there is only one.

There are separate intercity and express bus terminals.

The Sokcho Express Bus Terminal is particularly convenient for the beach area — Sokcho's official tourism information describes it as about a five-minute walk from Sokcho Beach.

Always check which terminal appears on your ticket before choosing accommodation or planning a taxi pickup.

Google Map: Understanding Sokcho Before Choosing a Hotel

The easiest way to understand Sokcho is to remember that the city sits between Seoraksan to the west and the East Sea to the east.

Useful Google Maps pins:

Where to Stay in Sokcho: Mountain or Sea?

This decision changes the character of the entire trip.

Stay Near Seoraksan If Hiking Comes First

If the main purpose of your visit is Ulsanbawi, staying closer to Seoraksan can be very convenient.

You can wake up early, reach the trail before spending time crossing the city and start hiking with plenty of daylight remaining.

My experience:

When I visited Sokcho, accommodation closer to the mountain felt relatively inexpensive compared with many options closer to the coast.

That does not mean mountain accommodation is always cheaper. Prices change by weekday, weekend, holiday and season. But it is worth comparing both areas rather than automatically booking the beach.

Stay Near the Coast If Food and Evening Atmosphere Matter More

The coast offers a completely different Sokcho experience.

You are closer to the sea, evening walks, seafood restaurants and dishes that feel distinctly local to Korea's east coast.

One dish I particularly recommend trying is mulhoe (물회).

Mulhoe normally combines sliced raw fish, vegetables and a cold spicy-sour broth. Some versions are served extremely chilled.

If you already enjoy sashimi or Korean hoe, eating mulhoe beside the sea is one of the experiences that makes Sokcho feel different from Seoul.

My simple rule:

Early hike + quieter mountain morning → stay closer to Seoraksan.

Ocean + restaurants + evening atmosphere → stay closer to the coast.

Compare Sokcho accommodation before choosing the mountain or coast.

Compare Sokcho Hotels on Klook

Should You Rent a Car for Sokcho?

You do not need a car simply to visit Seoraksan or hike Ulsanbawi.

Local buses connect Sokcho with the Seoraksan entrance, and taxis are available.

A rental car becomes more useful when Sokcho is part of a wider Gangwon-do road trip.

For example:

  • Seoraksan
  • Sokcho coast
  • Yangyang
  • Goseong
  • multiple beaches and cafés
  • sunrise viewpoints

If that is your itinerary, you can compare current rental-car options through DiscoverCars.

Before booking, foreign visitors should confirm the rental company's current licence requirements, International Driving Permit requirements where applicable, insurance coverage and accepted payment methods.

How to Get From Sokcho to Seoraksan National Park

The key destination for both the cable car and Ulsanbawi hike is the Seoraksan Sogongwon area.

By Local Bus

Sokcho bus routes 7 and 7-1 serve Seoraksan Sogongwon.

The cable-car operator's official directions also list routes 7 and 7-1 from the city and bus-terminal area toward Seoraksan.

Because city-bus departure times can change, check the official Sokcho Bus Information System on the day of travel:

Check Sokcho bus schedules

By Taxi

A taxi is more expensive but can make sense if:

  • you want to start hiking early
  • you are traveling as a couple or small group
  • you do not want to build the morning around a bus timetable

On a mountain day, arriving earlier can sometimes be worth more than saving a few thousand won.

Seoraksan Cable Car or Ulsanbawi Hike?

This is where many first-time visitors get confused.

Important: The Seoraksan Cable Car does NOT take you to Ulsanbawi.

The cable car goes toward Gwongeumseong. To reach Ulsanbawi, you have to hike.

Option A: Seoraksan Cable Car → Gwongeumseong

Choose the cable car if you want dramatic mountain scenery without committing several hours to a steep hike.

It is particularly useful for:

  • travelers with limited time
  • families
  • people who do not want a strenuous hike
  • visitors mainly interested in panoramic views

As of August 31, 2026, the official round-trip fares are:

Passenger Round Trip
Adult / middle-school age and older₩16,000
Child / 37 months to elementary-school age₩12,000
36 months and underFree

The cable car ride takes around five minutes each way.

There are two important booking rules:

1. Tickets are round trip.

2. There is no advance reservation.

Tickets are purchased on site because operations depend heavily on weather and wind conditions.

Strong wind or bad weather can stop the cable car.

Check today's Seorak Cable Car operation and official information

Option B: Ulsanbawi → Hike It

If the giant granite formation is the reason you came to Seoraksan, there is no cable-car shortcut.

Put on your hiking shoes.

Google Map: Ulsanbawi Hiking Area

Basic hiking flow:

Seoraksan Sogongwon → Sinheungsa Temple → Heundeulbawi / Gyejoam → Ulsanbawi

Open the main points in Google Maps:

Ulsanbawi Hiking Route: Distance, Time and Difficulty

Hikers climbing the steep Ulsanbawi trail in Seoraksan National Park

The standard Ulsanbawi route begins at Seoraksan Sogongwon.

The basic route is:

Sogongwon → Sinheungsa → Heundeulbawi → Ulsanbawi

Official tourism information describes the route as approximately 3.8 km each way and around two hours each way.

That number should be treated as a planning reference, not a deadline.

If you are a beginner, I would leave approximately 4–5 hours or more for the round trip once breaks, photos and time at the top are included.

What Does the Trail Feel Like?

The first section is much easier than the final climb.

You begin through the Sogongwon area and continue toward Sinheungsa Temple.

The trail then leads toward Heundeulbawi and Gyejoam.

After that, the character of the hike changes.

The upper section becomes noticeably steeper, and a long series of stairs leads toward Ulsanbawi.

This is where a pleasant mountain walk starts to feel like a proper hike.

If you are new to hiking, do not let faster hikers decide your pace.

Walk steadily.

Rest when you need to.

Leave enough time to descend safely.

Before leaving your hotel, check the Korea National Park Service for current trail closures and entrance-time restrictions:

Check official Seoraksan trail conditions

My Experience Hiking Ulsanbawi as a Beginner

I was a beginner when I hiked Ulsanbawi, and I still made it to the top.

I would not describe the climb as effortless.

The later section was tiring, especially as the trail became steeper, so I simply kept my own pace and stopped when I needed to.

The biggest surprise came at the summit.

The wind was extremely strong.

I visited in spring, and the exposed upper area felt much windier than the lower trail.

The wind was strong enough that I felt it could become dangerous if you were careless near exposed viewpoints.

And one very practical warning:

Watch your hat.

Seriously.

A cap that feels completely secure in Sokcho can suddenly become airborne at the top of Ulsanbawi.

Secure hats, sunglasses, light clothing and anything loosely attached to your backpack.

If the wind feels unsafe, forget the perfect photo and move away from exposed areas.

My experience also explains why I do not call Ulsanbawi an "easy beginner hike."

I reached the summit as a beginner.

That does not guarantee that every beginner will have the same experience.

Your fitness, weather, trail conditions and comfort with steep stairs all matter.

When Is the Best Time to Hike Ulsanbawi?

Spring: Comfortable Temperatures, But Watch the Wind

Spring brings fresh green scenery and generally more comfortable hiking temperatures than the middle of summer.

This is the season when I personally hiked Ulsanbawi.

My biggest lesson was to take summit wind seriously.

Conditions at the top can feel very different from the sheltered sections below.

Summer: Green but Hot and Humid

Summer turns Seoraksan deep green.

It can also be hot and humid, making the same climb feel harder.

If you hike during warmer months, starting early and carrying enough water becomes more important.

Rain can also make stairs and rocks slippery.

Autumn: My Pick for the Best Scenery

For pure scenery, autumn would be my first choice.

Ulsanbawi is impressive at any time of year, but granite cliffs surrounded by autumn foliage are one of Seoraksan's signature landscapes.

October is the month I would watch most closely.

Do not book around one "guaranteed peak foliage date," though.

The timing changes from year to year depending on temperatures and weather.

Check current foliage conditions shortly before your trip.

Winter: Beautiful but More Serious

Snow can make Ulsanbawi spectacular.

It can also make the route much more demanding.

Ice, snow, wind and freezing temperatures change this from an ordinary tourist hike into something that requires proper winter preparation.

If you are a first-time hiker, winter is not the season to improvise your equipment.

What Time Should You Hike Ulsanbawi for the Best View?

I would not advertise one magic photography time.

Mountain visibility depends more on cloud, fog, wind and weather than on the clock.

But for a normal clear-weather hiking day, my practical preference would be:

Start from Sogongwon around 07:00–08:00.

Depending on your speed, that can put you in the upper part of the mountain or around the summit later in the morning.

I prefer this approach because you gain:

  • more daylight for the descent
  • cooler hiking conditions than the middle of the day
  • less pressure if your climb takes longer than expected

I would not plan a beginner Ulsanbawi hike around sunset photography.

A beautiful photo is not worth rushing down steep mountain stairs as daylight disappears.

On a bad-weather day, the best photography time may simply be another day.

What to Bring for Ulsanbawi

  • hiking or walking shoes with good grip
  • enough drinking water
  • a light outer layer
  • sun protection
  • a small snack
  • a charged phone
  • weather-appropriate clothing
  • a secure place for loose personal items

And I will say it one more time:

secure your hat.

What to Eat After Hiking Ulsanbawi

Sokcho mulhoe with raw fish vegetables and cold spicy broth after a Seoraksan hike

You just spent several hours climbing a mountain.

This is a very good time to eat.

Option 1: Eat Near Seoraksan

If you are hungry immediately after the hike, the wider Seorak-dong area has Korean mountain-style restaurants.

Typical foods to look for include:

  • tofu dishes
  • hwangtae, or dried pollock
  • makguksu
  • hearty Korean set meals

Option 2: Go Back to the Coast for Mulhoe

This is the combination I find most interesting.

Morning: mountain.

Afternoon: sea.

Come down from Ulsanbawi and return toward the coast for mulhoe.

Mulhoe usually contains sliced raw fish and vegetables in a cold, spicy and tangy broth.

For a foreign visitor who already enjoys raw seafood, it can be one of the most distinctive food experiences in Sokcho.

If you do not eat raw seafood, there are plenty of cooked seafood and Korean alternatives.

Option 3: Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market

If everyone in your group wants something different, the market is an easy choice.

Look for:

  • dakgangjeong
  • seafood
  • ojingeo sundae
  • local snacks

This also sets up a good second Sokcho theme: traveling to Sokcho specifically for food.

A Simple 2-Day Sokcho & Seoraksan Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive and Experience Sokcho

Morning / afternoon: Travel from Incheon Airport or Seoul to Sokcho.

After check-in: Explore the coast, central Sokcho or the market.

Dinner: Try mulhoe, seafood or local market food.

Night: Sleep early if you are hiking the next morning.

Day 2: Ulsanbawi Day

07:00–08:00: Arrive at Seoraksan Sogongwon.

Morning: Hike toward Sinheungsa, Heundeulbawi and Ulsanbawi.

Late morning / midday: Enjoy the summit if weather conditions are safe.

Afternoon: Descend and eat.

Later: Return to Sokcho for the coast or market.

I prefer this to forcing Seoul → Sokcho → Ulsanbawi → beach → Seoul into one exhausting day trip.

FAQ: Sokcho, Seoraksan and Ulsanbawi

When is the best season?

For scenery, autumn is my pick. October is a good month to watch for foliage, but the exact peak changes every year.

What surprised me most about Ulsanbawi?

The wind at the exposed summit. I hiked in spring, and it was much stronger than I expected. Secure hats and other loose items.

Where should I stay?

Stay closer to Seoraksan if hiking is your main priority. Choose the coast if you want ocean atmosphere, restaurants and an easy evening food experience.

Final Thoughts

Sokcho works because you do not have to choose between mountains and the sea.

You can spend the morning climbing through the forest toward one of Seoraksan's most dramatic granite formations and finish the day beside the East Sea eating mulhoe.

If you do not want a strenuous climb, take the cable car to Gwongeumseong instead.

If you do want Ulsanbawi, start early, respect the weather and give yourself enough time.

I climbed it as a beginner.

I was tired.

The summit wind was stronger than I expected.

And I would still climb it again.
