Seoul at Night: Myeongdong, Hongdae & Itaewon
Three Different Ways to Experience Seoul After Dark
🇺🇸 INTRO
Seoul doesn't go to sleep when the sun goes down.
In fact, for many people, that's when the city becomes even more interesting.
The streets light up.
Restaurants stay busy.
Cafes remain open.
People meet friends after work.
And in neighborhoods like Myeongdong, Hongdae, and Itaewon, you can continue exploring long after dinner.
But here's the thing:
These three neighborhoods feel completely different at night.
So if you're wondering where to go after sunset, let JAY show you three different sides of Seoul.

🛍️ 1. Myeongdong — More Than Shopping
Myeongdong is probably one of the easiest places to start your first night in Seoul.
It's famous for shopping, Korean cosmetics, fashion brands, restaurants, cafes, and street food.
But here's something I want to tell you.
Don't just walk down the main street and leave.
There are quite a few fun places hidden around Myeongdong that you might miss if you only follow the main tourist route.
Here are some of JAY's picks.

🛒 MIMILINE — Korea's Version of Don Quijote?
If you like discovering unusual products, small accessories, beauty items, character goods, and random things you didn't know you needed, check out MIMILINE.
I like to describe it as a little like Korea's version of Don Quijote.
One interesting thing about MIMILINE is its strong focus on the physical shopping experience.
Instead of simply browsing products online, you can actually walk through the store and discover things one by one.
You'll find all kinds of interesting products, including accessories and items that can be difficult to find elsewhere.
Even Koreans sometimes visit stores like this when they're looking for something a little unusual or a unique accessory.
That's part of the fun.
You don't always know what you'll find until you walk inside.
📍 JAY's Tip
If you're looking for a souvenir that doesn't feel like a typical tourist souvenir, this is the kind of place I'd check out.
Don't go in with a shopping list.
Just walk around.
You might discover something completely unexpected.

Daeppang Arcade Myeongdong Milgiore
🎮 Daeppang Arcade — Myeongdong Milgiore
Want to take a break from shopping?
Head to an arcade.
Daeppang Arcade at Myeongdong Milgiore is a large entertainment space connected to Myeongdong Station, making it very easy to find.
It's a great place to experience one of the more playful sides of Korean entertainment culture.
You can try things like:
- Claw machines
- Coin karaoke
- Punching machines
- Pump It Up
- Racing games
- Various arcade games
The space is large, clean, and comfortable, so you don't need to be a serious gamer to enjoy it.
JAY's Tip
Go with a friend.
You might think you're just going to play one game.
Then suddenly you're competing over who can get the highest score or who can win a stuffed animal.
That's how arcades work. 😂

BUTTER Shop Myeongdong
🧸 BUTTER Shop Myeongdong
If you're into cute and colorful Korean lifestyle goods, add BUTTER to your Myeongdong walk.
It's filled with:
- Cute character goods
- Dolls and plush toys
- Stationery
- Small lifestyle items
- Interior accessories
- Fun little gifts
It's the kind of store where you can spend much longer than you originally planned.
Even if you don't buy anything, it's fun just to look around.
JAY's Tip
This is a good place to look for small Korean gifts that don't take up much space in your suitcase.

Wiggle Wiggle House Myeongdong
🌈 Wiggle Wiggle House Myeongdong
If you spend any time looking at Korean lifestyle trends on social media, you may have already seen Wiggle Wiggle.
Wiggle Wiggle is a colorful Korean lifestyle brand known for its playful designs, bright colors, character goods, and highly photogenic spaces.
It's somewhat similar to BUTTER in that you'll find lifestyle products, accessories, and cute goods.
But the atmosphere is different.
Wiggle Wiggle is much more colorful and Instagram-friendly.
The Myeongdong location spreads across multiple floors, giving you plenty of things to look at.
Even if you're not planning to buy anything, it's worth visiting simply for the colorful interior and photo opportunities.
📍 JAY's Tip
Bring your camera.
Seriously.
This is one of those places where the store itself becomes part of the experience.
🌭 Don't Forget the Myeongdong Street Food
Of course, you can't talk about Myeongdong without talking about its street food.
If you start around Myeongdong Station Exit 6 and walk toward the main Myeongdong shopping streets, you'll find plenty of food stalls along the way.
Depending on the season and current vendors, you may see things like:
- Korean corn dogs
- Tornado potatoes
- Dakgangjeong
- Dalgona
- Tteokbokki
- Eomuk (fish cake)
- Various Korean street snacks
One thing that may make international visitors feel more comfortable:
Many vendors in the main tourist area are used to serving foreign visitors, and you can often communicate in basic English.
So don't be afraid to point at something and ask.
You don't need to know the Korean name.
Just say:
"How much is this?"
Then give it a try.
🍢 JAY's Street Food Picks
There are plenty of choices, but if you ask me what I'd personally recommend:
🥔 Tornado Potato
A spiral-cut potato on a stick.
It's crispy, salty, fun to eat, and makes a great walking snack.
🌶️ Tteokbokki
Chewy rice cakes cooked in a spicy-sweet Korean sauce.
If you like spicy food, this is a must-try.
🍢 Eomuk
Korean fish cake served on a skewer, usually with warm broth.
This is especially good when the weather is cold.
My personal combination?
Tornado potato + tteokbokki + eomuk.
Don't ask me why.
It just works.

LINE FRIENDS SQUARE
🧸 LINE FRIENDS SQUARE Myeongdong
As you continue exploring Myeongdong, keep an eye out for LINE FRIENDS SQUARE.
The official store is located at 43 Myeongdong-gil and currently lists its Myeongdong store hours as 11:00 AM–10:00 PM.
It's a character and K-pop merchandise destination where you can find LINE FRIENDS IP, BT21, and other collaboration products.
For K-pop fans, this can be especially interesting because BT21 was created through a collaboration between BTS and LINE FRIENDS.
So if you or someone you're traveling with loves BTS or Korean character goods, this is definitely worth adding to your Myeongdong route.
🚶 The Best Way to Explore Myeongdong
Here's how I'd personally do it.
Start
Myeongdong Station Exit 6
↓
Walk toward the main Myeongdong shopping streets.
↓
Try some street food
↓
Browse the shops
↓
Check out MIMILINE
↓
Visit BUTTER
↓
Take some photos at Wiggle Wiggle
↓
Check out LINE FRIENDS SQUARE
↓
If you still have energy...
🎮 Go play some arcade games
And somewhere in between:
☕ Stop for coffee.
You don't need to follow this exact route.
The point is to walk and discover things along the way.
⭐ JAY's Myeongdong Tip
Here's what I think many first-time visitors get wrong.
They arrive in Myeongdong, walk down the main street, take a few photos, eat one thing, and leave.
Don't do that.
Myeongdong is much more fun when you explore the side streets and individual stores.
Look up.
Look down.
Walk into a store because something caught your eye.
Try food you've never seen before.
Take a random turn.
You might find something you weren't looking for at all.
And sometimes...
that's the best part of traveling.

Hongdae nightlife street in Seoul South Korea
🎤 2. Hongdae — Music, Youth & Energy
If Myeongdong feels like the easy introduction to Seoul nightlife, Hongdae is where things become more energetic.
Hongdae is closely associated with music, art, youth culture and nightlife.
The official Seoul tourism guide describes Hongdae as a place where Korean pop and indie culture come alive, particularly at night.
And you'll understand why as soon as you arrive.
You may see:
- Street performances
- Buskers
- Young people gathering with friends
- Fashion shops
- Cafes
- Restaurants
- Bars
- Clubs
- Small entertainment venues
The atmosphere can change from one street to the next.
One moment you're watching a street performance.
A few minutes later you're surrounded by music coming from a bar.
Then you turn a corner and discover a completely different little street.
That's part of Hongdae's charm.
JAY's Tip
Don't spend your entire night inside one place.
Hongdae is better when you explore.
Walk around.
Listen to the street performers.
Look into the small shops.
Find a cafe.
Grab some food.
Then keep walking.
If you're traveling with friends and want a more energetic night, Hongdae is probably one of the first places I'd recommend.

Itaewon nightlife street in Seoul South Korea
🌎 3. Itaewon — Seoul's International Nightlife
Then there's Itaewon.
This is a very different side of Seoul.
Itaewon is known for its international atmosphere, with restaurants, shops, bars, clubs, and food from many different cultures. Seoul's official tourism guide describes it as one of the city's most cosmopolitan neighborhoods and a major nightlife area.
You can find food from around the world here.
Indian.
Thai.
Turkish.
Mexican.
Italian.
American.
And much more.
That's what makes Itaewon interesting.
You can spend the evening in Korea while eating food from another part of the world.
The nightlife is also diverse, with everything from pubs and lounges to clubs and other late-night venues.
JAY's Tip
If you're a foreign traveler who wants to meet people from different countries, Itaewon is worth checking out.
Don't expect it to feel like traditional Korea.
That's not what Itaewon is about.
Instead, think of it as Seoul's international neighborhood.
It's one of the places where you can see just how global Seoul has become.
🌙 So Which One Should You Choose?
Here's my simple guide.
🛍️ Myeongdong
Best for:
First-time visitors, shopping, street food, easy evening walks
🎤 Hongdae
Best for:
Music, young energy, street performances, cafes, bars and nightlife
🌎 Itaewon
Best for:
International atmosphere, global food, bars, clubs and meeting people
There isn't a single "best" nightlife district.
It depends on what kind of night you want.
🍗 JAY's Late-Night Rule
Here's something I want you to remember when traveling in Korea.
Don't be afraid to eat late.
Korean nightlife isn't always about drinking or going to clubs.
Sometimes the best part of the night is simply finding a restaurant that's still open and ordering something delicious.
Korean fried chicken.
Tteokbokki.
Korean BBQ.
Ramyeon.
Jokbal.
Or even a simple convenience-store meal.
Sometimes you'll finish your night sitting at a small restaurant at 1 AM, talking with your friends about everything you did that day.
Those moments can become some of your best travel memories.
🚶 Is Seoul Safe at Night?
This is something many international visitors wonder about.
In busy central areas such as Myeongdong, Hongdae and Itaewon, you'll often see people out late into the evening.
That said, no city is completely risk-free.
Use normal travel precautions:
- Keep an eye on your belongings.
- Stay aware of your surroundings.
- Be careful with alcohol.
- If you're alone, let someone know where you are.
- Use official taxis or public transportation when needed.
Personally, I find Seoul quite comfortable to explore at night.
But comfort shouldn't replace common sense.
Enjoy the night, but stay smart.
⭐ JAY's Final Recommendation
If this is your first trip to Seoul, try experiencing all three.
Night 1
Myeongdong
Shopping + street food + easy walking
Night 2
Hongdae
Music + street performances + nightlife
Night 3
Itaewon
International food + bars + a completely different atmosphere
After that, you can decide which one feels most like your kind of Seoul.
Because that's the fun part.
There isn't just one Seoul.
There are many.
And sometimes...
you only discover the Seoul you really like after the sun goes down.
