Seoul in September 2026: What to Book, What to See & Dates You Shouldn’t Miss
Updated: August 29, 2026
1/4 — Why September 2026 Is a Special Time to Visit Seoul
September is one of the most interesting months to visit Seoul.
Summer heat begins to ease, outdoor events return across the city, major cultural festivals fill the calendar, and travelers can combine Seoul's classic attractions with events that only happen during this part of the year.
But September 2026 requires a little more planning than an ordinary Seoul trip.
There are three reasons.
First, several major Seoul events overlap during the month.
Second, Chuseok — one of Korea's most important national holidays — falls from September 16 to 18, 2026.
Third, some of Seoul's best September experiences happen only on specific dates.
So instead of building your itinerary first and checking events later, it makes more sense to start with the calendar.
The September 2026 Dates to Save
| Dates | What Is Happening |
|---|---|
| Sep 1–6 | 2027 S/S Seoul Fashion Week |
| Sep 3–20 | Seoul Light DDP 2026 Autumn |
| Sep 4–Nov 1 | Seoul Outdoor Library autumn operation |
| Sep 6–27 | Car-Free Jamsugyo Festival |
| Sep 16–18 | Chuseok holiday |
| Sep 17–19 | Seoul Beauty Week |
| Sep 19–20 | Seoul Street Arts Festival / major autumn opening weekend |
| From Sep 21 | Seoul Autumn Festival |
| Sep–Oct | Hangang River Light Show fall season |
The Seoul Metropolitan Government lists these and other September events in its official 2026 Major Tasks and Event Schedule.
You can also check newly added or updated events through the Official Seoul Tourism Events Calendar.
September Weather: Still Warm, But Much Better for Walking
Do not pack for Seoul in September as if it were already cold autumn weather.
Korea Tourism Organization climate data lists Seoul's historical September averages at approximately:
Average high: 26.2°C
Average low: 17.7°C
See the VISITKOREA official climate guide.
Early September can still feel warm during the afternoon.
By late September, mornings and evenings usually feel much more comfortable for walking.
A practical packing combination is:
Light shirts for daytime
Comfortable walking shoes
A thin jacket or overshirt for evenings
Compact umbrella
Light rain protection
Do not build an entire trip around historical averages, however.
Check the actual Seoul forecast shortly before departure.
JAY's September Rule
If you are flexible with your dates, do not choose your Seoul itinerary randomly.
September has three very different travel periods:
September 1–13
Best for:
fashion + DDP + outdoor Seoul
September 14–20
Best for:
Chuseok culture + major festival overlap
But this is also the period when you need to check holiday operating schedules most carefully.
September 21–30
Best for:
autumn festivals + outdoor activities + a more normal post-Chuseok city rhythm
For many first-time visitors who want fewer holiday complications, the final part of September can be especially easy to plan.
The Best Things to See in Seoul in September 2026
1. Seoul Light DDP 2026 Autumn
One of the easiest September events to add to a Seoul itinerary is Seoul Light DDP.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government's 2026 schedule lists:
September 3–20, 2026
DDP — Dongdaemun Design Plaza — becomes a large-scale media-art environment using the building's distinctive exterior.
The city describes Seoul Light DDP as a media facade project using the approximately 222-meter exterior of DDP.
See Seoul's official 2026 annual events guide.
Combine It With:
Dongdaemun → DDP → Seoul Light → late dinner
This is one of the easiest evening itineraries for a first-time visitor because you do not need to dedicate an entire day to the event.
2. 2027 S/S Seoul Fashion Week
Despite being held in 2026, the September event is officially called 2027 S/S Seoul Fashion Week because it presents the following spring/summer season.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government confirmed the 2026 dates as:
September 1–6, 2026
The main locations include:
Dongdaemun Design Plaza
Lotte World Tower
This year's program expands beyond the traditional DDP-centered format, with runway shows and public-facing K-fashion activities.
Read the official Seoul Fashion Week announcement.
You do not need to be a fashion-industry professional to enjoy the atmosphere around DDP during Fashion Week.
However, individual runway access and special programs may have separate entry rules.
Check the official event information before assuming a show is open to the public.
3. Car-Free Jamsugyo Festival
If you enjoy Seoul outdoors, save a September Sunday for the Han River.
Seoul's 2026 schedule lists the Car-Free Jamsugyo Festival from September 6 to 27.
Jamsugyo is the lower-level bridge beneath Banpo Bridge.
During the festival period, programmed car-free events transform the bridge area into an outdoor public space.
This pairs naturally with:
Banpo Hangang Park → Jamsugyo → riverside picnic → evening Han River view
Check the city's official 2026 Seoul events schedule before visiting because outdoor event programming can be affected by weather or operational changes.
4. Seoul Outdoor Library
The autumn Seoul Outdoor Library program is scheduled to operate from September 4 to November 1, 2026 at locations including:
Seoul Plaza
Gwanghwamun Square
Cheonggyecheon
This is not something I would tell a first-time visitor to cross Seoul specifically to see.
Instead, use it as a free bonus stop if it overlaps with your existing route.
For example:
Gyeongbokgung → Gwanghwamun → Outdoor Library → Cheonggyecheon → Myeongdong
That creates a strong central-Seoul walking day without adding unnecessary transportation.
5. Seoul's Fall Hangang Light Show
Seoul has also scheduled five fall Hangang River Light Show performances during September–October 2026.
The city describes the show as a multimedia drone performance using different types of drones against the Han River nightscape.
However, the citywide annual schedule does not yet provide every individual fall performance date in the source currently available.
So do not build a non-refundable itinerary around a guessed date.
Check the official Seoul annual-events page and the Visit Seoul event calendar shortly before your trip.
JAY's Pick
If you have only one September evening to dedicate to a special event:
DDP during Seoul Light is the easiest to integrate into a normal tourist itinerary.
If you have a full weekend:
add the Han River and Jamsugyo.
Visiting Seoul During Chuseok 2026: What Tourists Need to Know
This is the section you should read carefully if your Seoul trip overlaps September 16–18, 2026.
Those dates are officially listed as the 2026 Chuseok holiday period in Seoul's annual schedule.
Chuseok is one of Korea's most important traditional holidays.
Many Koreans travel to their hometowns or spend time with family.
For international tourists, that creates both opportunities and complications.
Is Seoul Closed During Chuseok?
No.
Do not believe the old travel myth that:
“Everything in Korea closes during Chuseok.”
That is too simplistic.
Major tourist areas can remain active, and Seoul traditionally operates special cultural programs during national holidays.
However, individual restaurants, shops, museums, attractions and private businesses may operate on different schedules.
That means the correct approach is not:
“Seoul is closed.”
It is:
“Check the places that matter to your itinerary individually.”
What Could Be Different During Chuseok?
Pay particular attention to:
Independent restaurants
Traditional markets
Small shops
Museums
Guided tours
Performance schedules
Intercity transportation
Attractions requiring reservations
If you plan to leave Seoul during the holiday period, transportation deserves even more attention because Chuseok is a major domestic travel period.
Seoul Is Also Planning Chuseok Events
The city's September schedule lists a Chuseok Seoul Local Market tentatively scheduled for September 15–17.
More interesting for foreign visitors, Seoul has already announced Chuseok programming at its public hanok facilities.
At the Bukchon Traditional Culture Center, the city lists:
Bukchon Dorak – Chuseok
September 19–20, 2026
The program is scheduled to include:
Exhibitions
Performances
Hands-on activities
Guided tours
Traditional games
See the official Seoul public-hanok program announcement.
Notice something important:
The Bukchon program is September 19–20, immediately after the September 16–18 official Chuseok holiday period.
That makes the weekend after Chuseok particularly attractive for travelers interested in Korean traditional culture.
A Good Chuseok-Day Strategy
Instead of building a tightly scheduled shopping-and-restaurant itinerary, create a flexible cultural day.
For example:
Gyeongbokgung area → Bukchon/Insadong → traditional cultural space → evening walk
Then verify each specific attraction's holiday schedule before going.
What I Would NOT Do
I would not schedule your most important:
Michelin restaurant reservation
Specialty shop visit
Small museum
Private tour
for Chuseok without checking that it is operating.
Nor would I assume normal opening hours based on Google Maps alone.
During a national holiday, use the venue's official site or current social channel when available.
JAY's Chuseok Rule
If your first Korea trip overlaps September 16–18:
Do not cancel the trip because of Chuseok.
Instead, make the holiday part of the experience.
But keep your itinerary looser than usual and verify anything that would seriously disappoint you if it were closed.
What to Book Before Your September 2026 Seoul Trip
Not everything in Seoul needs to be reserved weeks in advance.
In fact, over-booking Seoul can make a trip unnecessarily rigid.
But there are several things worth checking before September.
Book Early: Your Hotel
September contains multiple major events plus the Chuseok period.
If your travel dates are fixed, accommodation should be one of the first things you secure.
For first-time visitors:
Myeongdong / Jongno
Best for:
Palaces
Gwanghwamun
Insadong
Central sightseeing
Hongdae
Best for:
Nightlife
Airport access via AREX
Younger atmosphere
Dongdaemun
Best for:
DDP
Fashion Week
Seoul Light
Late-night city atmosphere
Gangnam / Jamsil
Best for:
COEX
Lotte World Tower
Southern Seoul attractions
If your main purpose is Seoul Fashion Week or Seoul Light DDP, staying around Dongdaemun can significantly reduce transportation time.
Check Before Booking: Festival Tickets
Many large public Seoul festivals have substantial free-access areas.
But individual performances, runway shows, tours or special programs may require registration or tickets.
For Fashion Week in particular, Seoul has announced public ticket giveaways and live-streaming opportunities.
See the official 2027 S/S Seoul Fashion Week announcement.
Do not buy unofficial “Fashion Week access” simply because someone advertises it online.
Check official entry information first.
Reserve Carefully Around Chuseok
If you are visiting around September 16–18, prioritize advance confirmation for anything with a fixed time.
Examples:
Restaurant reservations
Guided experiences
Performances
Airport transfers for unusual arrival times
Intercity train travel
Your normal Seoul subway travel does not require advance reservations, but longer-distance holiday travel is a different matter.
September 2026: Best Weekend Choices
September 5–6
Good for:
Fashion Week
Seoul Light DDP
First Car-Free Jamsugyo weekend
Outdoor Seoul
September 19–20
Potentially one of the busiest and most interesting cultural weekends.
The city's schedule includes:
Seoul Beauty Week
Seoul Street Arts Festival
Seoul Autumn Festa opening-period programming
Seoul International Ultra Trail Running Race
Bukchon Chuseok programs
This is an unusually concentrated event weekend.
Plan by area, not by trying to attend every event.
September 26–27
Good for travelers who want:
Post-Chuseok Seoul
Autumn atmosphere
Car-Free Jamsugyo
Ongoing Seoul Autumn Festival
Existing exhibitions and outdoor attractions
Suggested 3-Day September Route
Day 1 — Historic Seoul
Gyeongbokgung → Bukchon → Insadong → Gwanghwamun → Cheonggyecheon
Day 2 — Modern Seoul
Seongsu → Hangang → Jamsugyo/Banpo → night view
Day 3 — DDP & K-Culture
Dongdaemun → DDP → shopping/cafés → Seoul Light DDP
This route works particularly well in September because it combines permanent attractions with seasonal events instead of forcing your trip to revolve entirely around festivals.
Final Verdict: Is September a Good Time to Visit Seoul?
Yes.
September 2026 is particularly strong because Seoul's regular attractions overlap with:
Seoul Fashion Week
Seoul Light DDP
Han River programs
Car-Free Jamsugyo
Chuseok cultural experiences
Seoul Beauty Week
Seoul Autumn Festival
The key is to understand that September is not one single travel season.
Early September is still warm and event-heavy.
Mid-September revolves around Chuseok.
Late September transitions into Seoul's autumn festival season.
JAY's Final Rule
Before flying to Seoul, save three pages:
Seoul Metropolitan Government — 2026 Annual Events
Official Visit Seoul Events Calendar
VISITKOREA Official Travel Information
Check them again during the week before your trip.
Festivals, outdoor performances and operating hours can change.
Use this guide to build the structure of your trip — and use the official sources for the final confirmation.
