Where Should You Stay in Seoul? Myeongdong vs Hongdae vs Gangnam vs Jamsil
Where Should You Stay in Seoul?
Choosing where to stay in Seoul can affect your trip more than choosing the hotel itself.
A hotel can look perfect on a booking site, but if it puts you on the wrong side of Seoul for the things you actually want to do, that “good deal” stops feeling quite so good.
Seoul is big enough that hotel location changes how your days feel.
Myeongdong, Hongdae, Gangnam and Jamsil are all popular with travelers, but I would not recommend them to the same person.
If a friend asked me where to stay, I would first ask:
That question usually matters more than hotel stars, room size or whether a property looks trendy on Instagram.
The Short Answer
| Area | Best For | Biggest Strength | Main Trade-Off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Myeongdong | First-time visitors | Central sightseeing base | Tourist-heavy |
| Hongdae | Cafés, nightlife, younger travelers | Neighborhood energy + airport rail access | Less central for palace-heavy itineraries |
| Gangnam | Southern Seoul, shopping, business | Great when your plans are south of the river | Longer trips to many historic sights |
| Jamsil | Families and Lotte World trips | Modern, convenient family base | Farther from Seoul's historic core |
Cafés + nightlife → Hongdae
Southern Seoul → Gangnam
Family + Lotte World → Jamsil
1. Myeongdong — My Default Choice for a First Seoul Trip
For most first-time visitors, Myeongdong is still the easiest place for me to recommend.
Not because it is the coolest neighborhood in Seoul.
It isn't.
And I would not tell you that this is where ordinary Seoul residents spend all of their weekends.
I recommend it because the location works.
You are staying in the middle of a part of Seoul that naturally connects with places many first-time travelers already plan to visit: Namsan, Namdaemun, central Seoul, Jongno, the palace area, Insadong and Cheonggyecheon.
Seoul itself officially classifies the Myeongdong-Namdaemun area as one of the city's special tourism zones, combining shopping, dining, history and culture.
Why Myeongdong works so well
A first Seoul trip often involves moving between several classic sights in one day.
From Myeongdong, a day such as:
feels much more natural than starting every morning with a long cross-city commute.
You also have T-Luggage facilities at Myeong-dong Station, which can be useful before check-in or after checkout.
The downside
Myeongdong is heavily geared toward visitors.
If what you want is a quiet residential neighborhood and the feeling of temporarily living like a local, this probably would not be my first choice.
But on a short first trip, convenience usually matters more to me than pretending the tourist center is somehow a mistake.
2. Hongdae — Better If You Want Seoul After Dark
Hongdae gives you a very different trip.
If Myeongdong feels like a base for sightseeing, Hongdae can feel like the neighborhood itself is part of the attraction.
Cafés, restaurants, bars, shops, busking and younger street culture are a big part of the area's identity. Seoul officially describes the Hongdae tourism zone as a center of youthful culture and art.
This is where I would seriously look if evenings matter to you as much as daytime sightseeing.
Who I would put in Hongdae
Solo travelers, couples, café lovers, nightlife travelers and people who want a more energetic neighborhood around the hotel usually make more sense here than families trying to build every day around palace sightseeing.
Hongik University Station also connects to the Airport Railroad, which can make arrival and departure particularly convenient depending on exactly where your accommodation is.
Hongik Univ. Station also has an official T-Luggage location.
When I would not choose Hongdae
If your itinerary is mostly Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Insadong, Namsan and traditional central Seoul, I would not choose Hongdae only because the neighborhood looks fun online.
The commute is manageable.
But after several days, the extra movement becomes part of your trip.
3. Gangnam — Great When Your Seoul Trip Is Actually in Gangnam
This sounds obvious, but this is one of the hotel-location mistakes I would most like first-time visitors to avoid.
Gangnam is famous internationally, so travelers sometimes book a hotel there before looking at the rest of their itinerary.
Then most of the places they want to visit turn out to be north of the Han River.
Gangnam is absolutely worth staying in when your trip gives you a reason to be there.
Think COEX, Bongeunsa, Cheongdam, Apgujeong, southern Seoul shopping, business appointments, restaurants and nightlife south of the river.
Seoul officially designates the Gangnam MICE area as one of its major special tourism zones.
For those travelers, staying in Gangnam can save a surprising amount of time.
But if you plan to spend most days around Jongno, Gyeongbokgung and Bukchon, I would not pick Gangnam simply because the hotel is newer or the neighborhood name is famous.
I count travel time as part of the hotel price.
Saving a little on a room is less impressive if you spend another hour or two every day crossing the city.
If COEX, Gangnam, Cheongdam or southern Seoul dominate your itinerary, compare hotels here before booking across the river.
Compare Gangnam Hotels →4. Jamsil — The One Families Should Look at More Often
Jamsil is the option I think families overlook most often.
If Lotte World is a major part of your trip, staying on the opposite side of Seoul just because somebody online said “stay in Myeongdong” does not make much sense.
Jamsil puts you close to Lotte World, Lotte World Tower, Seoul Sky, Seokchon Lake, Songpa and Olympic Park.
Seoul also recognizes Jamsil as one of its official special tourism zones.
The whole area feels different from the older historic center.
It is modern, large-scale and full of shopping and entertainment facilities.
That can make life easier when you are traveling with children, a stroller, shopping bags or a schedule built around Lotte attractions.
Jamsil Station also has an official T-Luggage location.
The catch
Jamsil is not where I would automatically put someone whose dream Seoul trip is entirely Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Insadong and central Seoul.
Those places are perfectly reachable, but they are not next door.
Staying nearby can be much easier when Lotte World, Songpa and southeastern Seoul are already central to your plans.
Compare Jamsil Hotels →What About Seoul Station?
I would not make Seoul Station a fifth main competitor in this article, because it solves a slightly different problem.
But it deserves a mention.
If you plan to use KTX frequently, take day trips outside Seoul, move between Korean cities or prioritize rail connections, staying near Seoul Station can be very practical.
I would especially compare it against Myeongdong when your itinerary includes several intercity train journeys.
This can be a smarter base if Seoul is only one part of a bigger Korea itinerary.
Compare Seoul Station Hotels →Airport Convenience Shouldn't Decide Your Whole Trip
Airport access matters.
But it matters mainly on arrival and departure days.
Your hotel location affects every day in between.
Hongdae can work particularly well with the Airport Railroad. Myeongdong is a convenient central base once you arrive. Gangnam and Jamsil are farther southeast, so your preferred airport transfer can change depending on the number of people, luggage and arrival time.
A solo traveler arriving in the afternoon with one suitcase may happily use public transport.
A family arriving late with several large bags might make a completely different decision.
I would at least compare the price when traveling as a family, arriving late or carrying several bags.
Check Airport Pickup Options →For taxis inside Korea, I would also prepare at least one local-friendly taxi app before you arrive.
Don't Ignore Your Luggage
Hotel location feels very different when you are carrying luggage.
Two subway transfers with a small backpack are nothing.
Two subway transfers with two big suitcases during rush hour are a different trip.
Seoul Metro currently operates T-Luggage storage at major stations including Seoul Station, Hongik Univ., Jamsil and Myeong-dong.
So if you arrive before check-in or have several hours after checkout, you do not necessarily have to drag your suitcase through the entire city.
What I Would Choose for Different Trips
→ Myeongdong
You can concentrate on seeing Seoul instead of optimizing transportation every morning.
→ Hongdae
The neighborhood still has something to offer after your daytime sightseeing ends.
→ Gangnam
There is little reason to cross the river twice every day if most of your plans are already here.
→ Jamsil
Staying nearby can make a family itinerary much easier.
→ Compare Myeongdong and Seoul Station
Rail convenience may matter more than nightlife or neighborhood atmosphere.
Should You Split Your Stay?
On a longer Seoul trip, sometimes.
For example:
could make sense if the second half of your trip is built around Lotte World and southeastern Seoul.
But I would not change hotels just to experience two neighborhoods.
Checkout, luggage storage, transportation, waiting for the next room and unpacking again all cost time.
For a short Seoul trip, one well-located hotel is usually better than two theoretically perfect ones.
My Ranking for a Typical First-Time Visitor
Best overall balance for a classic first Seoul itinerary.
My pick when nightlife, cafés and neighborhood atmosphere matter more.
The strongest alternative for many family itineraries.
Excellent for the right itinerary, but not my automatic first-trip base.
That ranking is not universal.
If your itinerary is mostly south of the Han River, Gangnam can jump straight to number one.
And that is really the point.
There is no single best neighborhood in Seoul.
There is only the neighborhood that creates the least unnecessary travel for your trip.
JAY's Final Pick
If you still have no idea where to stay, I would book Myeongdong for a first Seoul trip.
If Myeongdong feels too touristy, look at Hongdae.
If your itinerary keeps saying COEX, Gangnam, Cheongdam and southern Seoul, stay in Gangnam.
And if Lotte World is the highlight of your family trip, stop making everyone cross Seoul and compare Jamsil.
A good Seoul hotel isn't just a nice room. It's the room that keeps you from wasting your trip getting somewhere else.
Before booking, open your itinerary, mark the places you actually plan to visit, and then choose your hotel.
Not the other way around.
