Udo Island From Jeju: Ferry, ID Rules, Car Restrictions & Getting Around

JAY JEJU ISLAND GUIDE
Information checked: September 11, 2026.
Ferry fares, vehicle restrictions and Udo transport guidance were checked against current Jeju and Korea tourism information. Ferry operation can still change on the day because of weather and sea conditions.

Udo looks deceptively easy.

The ferry from eastern Jeju takes only around 10–15 minutes, so on a map it can feel like one of those places you simply “add” to a Jeju itinerary.

I wouldn't plan it that casually.

You need identification to board. Ferry operation can change with the sea. Ordinary Jeju rental cars are generally restricted from entering Udo. And once you arrive, your choice between the sightseeing bus, a bicycle and an electric mobility rental can completely change the day.

None of this makes Udo difficult. It just means the easiest Udo trip is usually the one where you make a few practical decisions before you start chasing beaches.

JAY'S LOW-STRESS DEFAULT
Park your Jeju rental car at Seongsan Port.
Cross as a foot passenger.
Decide how to move around Udo after checking the actual weather.
For most first-time international visitors, this is simpler than trying to build the trip around taking a mainland rental car onto the island.

First decision: bus, e-bike, bicycle or walking?

There isn't one correct answer.

Udo is roughly 3.8 km long with a circumference of about 17 km. That sounds small until you add coastal wind, summer sun, café stops, luggage and the need to make your return ferry.

Option Best for Why choose it Think twice if...
Sightseeing loop bus First-timers, families, non-cyclists Low hassle and connects major stops You want complete freedom over timing
Electric bicycle Confident riders travelling light More freedom with less effort than a regular bike Wind is strong or rental terms are unclear
Regular bicycle Active travelers with time Simple, flexible and inexpensive Heat, wind or limited time will make it miserable
Walking One area or a very slow full day No rental logistics You expect to see the whole island quickly
Jeju rental car Only confirmed exception cases Useful only when your vehicle is actually eligible You have not confirmed entry and insurance

If a friend were visiting Udo for the first time and didn't particularly enjoy cycling, I would tell them to take the loop bus.

If they liked riding and the weather looked calm, I'd consider an e-bike. I would not choose it just because the photos look more fun.

Taking the ferry from Seongsan Port

Most travelers approaching Udo from eastern Jeju use Seongsanpo General Passenger Terminal.

The terminal address is 130-21 Seongsandeungyong-ro, Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo-si.

Ferries can arrive at either Cheonjin Port or Haumokdong Port on Udo. Both are normal arrival points, so I wouldn't build the entire day around reaching only one unless a rental pickup or another reservation makes that necessary.

Official tourism information describes the crossing as approximately 10–15 minutes. Departures are commonly frequent during operating hours, but sea conditions, vessel operation and season can change the real timetable.

Don't plan around the last ferry. Check the final return sailing when you arrive on Udo. A timetable screenshot saved before the trip is useful, but same-day information matters more.
Foot passengers boarding a ferry from Seongsan Port to Udo Island

Bring ID — for most foreign visitors, bring your passport

Identification is required for the ferry boarding process.

For a short-term international traveler, I would simply carry the passport rather than trying to work out which alternative document a specific counter may accept.

You may also need to complete passenger information before boarding.

What I'd have with me Passport
Phone with enough battery
Some Korean won as backup
Payment card
Screenshot of the day's ferry information
Light wind layer or sun protection depending on conditions

How much is the Udo ferry?

Current VISITKOREA information lists the adult Seongsan–Udo round-trip total at ₩10,500.

Adult round trip ₩10,500
To Udo ₩6,000
From Udo ₩4,500

Treat these as a current official reference rather than a permanent price. Check the fare displayed by the operator when you travel.

Can you take a Jeju rental car onto Udo?

For an ordinary tourist rental car, the practical answer is usually no.

Jeju's current official guidance says restrictions on outside vehicles in Udo-myeon have been extended from August 1, 2026 through July 31, 2029.

There are exceptions.

Current guidance includes certain vehicles used by travelers with mobility needs, vehicles used by guests staying overnight on Udo, qualifying Class 1 low-emission rental vehicles such as electric or hydrogen vehicles, and certain charter buses.

But this is the important part:

Being in an exception category does not mean you should simply drive onto the ferry and hope for the best.

Confirm eligibility with the ferry operator and confirm with your rental company that taking the car onto Udo is permitted under your rental and insurance conditions.

JAY'S TAKE
If I already had a rental car for Jeju, I wouldn't treat that as a reason to take it onto Udo.

I'd use the car to reach Seongsan, park it, cross on foot and let Udo be a different kind of day.
Need a rental car for the rest of Jeju?
A car can still be useful for exploring mainland Jeju even if you leave it at Seongsan for your Udo day trip. Compare the insurance, pickup location and vehicle conditions rather than choosing only by headline price.

Be careful with the word “electric”

Rental shops on Udo may offer several kinds of bicycles and electric mobility options.

Don't assume every vehicle with a battery follows the same licence, age or insurance rules.

An electric bicycle, scooter, small electric vehicle and other powered device may be treated differently depending on the model and legal classification.

Before paying, I would ask what licence the provider requires, whether insurance is included, what happens if the vehicle is damaged, whether a helmet is provided and when the vehicle must be returned.

If the explanation is vague, I would take the bus or a regular bicycle instead. Udo is too small a place to spend half the afternoon arguing about a rental contract.

Don't try to circle everything

Official Jeju information estimates that walking around Udo without stops takes roughly three to four hours.

Add the ferry, lunch, photos, a café, a beach and actual time spent looking at the sea and the day gets much longer.

This is why I prefer thinking in two or three anchors rather than “complete the island.”

A sensible first-trip combination Udobong Peak + Udo Lighthouse area
→ one beach
→ café or lunch
→ enough buffer to return without running for the ferry

Udobong rises about 100 metres and gives you one of the clearest ways to understand the island's shape and landscape.

Geommeolle Beach gives you darker volcanic coastal scenery.

Hagosudong has a broader sandy beach and clear water.

Seobinbaeksa looks pale enough that people still casually call it a coral beach, but the shoreline is actually made from rhodoliths — hardened red-algae formations.

The rhodolith beach is protected as a Natural Monument. Look, photograph and leave it there.

Mobile data matters more here than it sounds

On Udo, your phone isn't only for photos.

You may use it for ferry information, maps, weather, translation and checking rental terms.

My realistic Udo day

If I were planning a first visit Arrive at Seongsan Port with buffer time
→ check the day's return ferry information
→ board as a foot passenger
→ arrive on Udo and check actual wind/weather
→ choose loop bus or bicycle/e-bike
→ Udobong + Lighthouse area
→ lunch or café
→ one beach
→ return to the correct port with plenty of time
→ ferry back to Seongsan

I would rather come back wishing I'd seen one more beach than spend the final hour wondering whether I'm going to miss the boat.

Udo rewards a little empty space in the itinerary.

JAY'S FINAL TAKE

Udo isn't a difficult day trip.

It becomes difficult when you try to control every part of it before you know what the sea and wind are doing.

I wouldn't force a rental car onto the island just because I rented one for Jeju.

I wouldn't rent a powered vehicle because somebody on social media made it look cute.

And I wouldn't try to tick off every beach around a 17-kilometre coastline.

Cross the water.
Check the conditions.
Pick a few places.
Leave enough time to enjoy being on an island.

Quick Udo checklist

✓ Bring your passport or valid accepted ID.

✓ Check same-day ferry operation and the final return sailing.

✓ Do not assume your ordinary Jeju rental car can enter Udo.

✓ Confirm both ferry eligibility and rental-car insurance if you think you qualify for an exception.

✓ Choose your island transport after checking wind and weather.

✓ Confirm licence and insurance conditions before renting powered mobility.

✓ Plan two or three main stops instead of racing around the entire island.

✓ Keep enough battery and mobile data for maps and same-day information.
