Picnics, Bicycles, Ramyeon & Seoul's Night View
If you've seen photos of Seoul, you've probably seen the Han River.

The river runs through the heart of Seoul and divides the city into northern and southern areas.
But for Koreans, the Han River is more than just a beautiful view.
It's a place to relax, exercise, eat, meet friends, and escape the busy city for a few hours.
And that's exactly why I recommend visiting it.
You don't need an expensive restaurant.
You don't need a tour guide.
You don't even need a strict plan.
Just go to the river.
Walk around.
Find a comfortable spot.
And enjoy Seoul at your own pace.

🌳 1. Have a Picnic by the Han River
One of the most common things you'll see at the Han River is people sitting on the grass.
Friends.
Couples.
Families.
Solo travelers.
Some people bring their own picnic equipment, while others simply buy something nearby and sit down.
You may also see people using picnic mats.
If you're visiting Seoul during good weather, this is one of the easiest ways to experience the river.
You don't have to do anything special.
Just sit.
Talk.
Eat something.
Watch the boats.
Look at the skyline.
Sometimes doing nothing is exactly what you need after a busy day of sightseeing.

| Han River picnic mat rental Seoul |
🧺 Don't Have a Picnic Mat? You Can Rent One.
Don't worry if you didn't bring a picnic mat with you.
Many Han River parks offer picnic mats and picnic sets for rent.
You can often find rental shops near subway station exits or around the entrances to the Han River parks.
Depending on the rental shop, you may be able to choose from simple picnic mats or larger picnic sets with additional items.
Prices can vary slightly from one shop to another, so take a quick look at the rental options and prices before you choose.
Most rentals are charged by the hour, so check how long you can use the items before paying.
JAY's Tip
You don't need to carry a picnic mat all the way from home.
Just arrive at the Han River, find a nearby rental shop, pick a mat or picnic set, and you're ready for your Han River picnic.

🚲 2. Rent a Bicycle
Want to see more of the river?
Try cycling.
The Han River has extensive cycling paths, and riding along the river is one of the best ways to see more of Seoul without spending the entire day walking.
You can ride slowly and stop whenever you see something interesting.
Don't worry about being athletic.
This isn't a race.
JAY's Tip
Don't try to see everything in one ride.
Pick a section of the river, ride slowly, stop for photos, and enjoy the scenery.
The goal isn't to finish a certain distance.
The goal is to enjoy the ride.

🚲 Bicycle Rental Is Easy
Just like picnic mats, you can rent bicycles at many Han River parks.
There are many Han River parks throughout Seoul, so it would be difficult to explain exactly where every rental shop is.
But don't worry.
Most bicycle rental shops are located near the entrances of the Han River parks, so they are usually easy to find.
You can simply look for a bicycle rental sign when you enter the park.
And there are more choices than you might expect.
Depending on the rental shop, you may find:
- 🚲 Single bicycles
- 🚲 Children's bicycles
- 🚲 Two-person bicycles
- 🚲 Four-person bicycles
- 🚲 Mountain bikes
- ⚡ Electric bicycles
So whether you're traveling alone, with a partner, or with your family, there's a good chance you'll find something that works for you.
💰 How Much Does It Cost?
Rental prices depend on the bicycle and rental duration.
Common rental periods include:
30 minutes · 1 hour · 1.5 hours
Prices can vary considerably depending on the type of bicycle and the rental shop.
As a rough guide, you may find rentals ranging from around ₩3,000 to ₩30,000.
Don't worry about calculating everything yourself.
The rental shop will usually have the prices and rental times clearly displayed.
Just check the price before you choose your bicycle.
JAY's Tip
If you're visiting the Han River for the first time, don't worry about finding the rental shop in advance.
Go to the park entrance first.
Look around.
You'll usually find the rental shop nearby.
Choose the bicycle that looks fun, check the rental time and price, and you're ready to go.
And one more thing...
Don't forget to take a photo before you start riding.
You might be surprised how different Seoul looks from a bicycle.

🌇 3. Visit Around Sunset
If you ask me when you should visit the Han River...
I'd say around sunset.
During the day, you can see the river, parks, bridges, and Seoul's skyline.
But as the sun begins to disappear, the atmosphere changes.
The sky changes color.
The city lights begin to turn on.
And suddenly Seoul looks completely different.
Stay a little longer.
Don't leave as soon as the sun goes down.
The night is just beginning.

🍜 4. JAY's Secret Han River Tip: Eat Convenience Store Ramyeon
Now we're getting to one of my favorite parts.
Han River + convenience store ramyeon.
This is one of those simple experiences that many Koreans enjoy.
And if you're visiting Korea for the first time, you should try it at least once.
Some convenience stores around the Han River have machines that cook instant ramyeon.
You choose your noodles, put them in the designated container, follow the instructions, and let the machine cook them.
Then take your ramyeon outside.
Find a nice place by the river.
And enjoy it with the Seoul skyline in front of you.
Sounds simple?
It is.
But it's surprisingly memorable.
🌶️ JAY's Ramyeon Warning
There's one thing you need to know.
Korean ramyeon can be spicy.
Very spicy.
If you're not used to spicy food, don't start with the hottest noodles you can find.
For your first experience, I'd recommend:
Jin Ramen — Mild
or
Ansungtangmyun
And then there's Shin Ramyun.
It's one of Korea's most famous instant noodles.
But if you're sensitive to spicy food...
You have been warned. 😂
🧀 JAY's Ramyeon Upgrade
Here's another trick.
When you go into the convenience store, look for a small package of shredded cheese.
Add it to your ramyeon while it's cooking.
The cheese can make the noodles:
Creamier.
Richer.
Less spicy.
And honestly...
More addictive.
You can also grab some:
Kimchi
or
Danmuji
which is Korean pickled yellow radish.
Both go really well with ramyeon.

| Korean convenience store Seoul |
🏪 The Convenience Store Is Part of the Experience
For many international visitors, Korean convenience stores are interesting by themselves.
They're not just places to buy drinks.
You can find:
- Instant noodles
- Kimbap
- Sandwiches
- Snacks
- Ice cream
- Drinks
- Coffee
- Ready-to-eat meals
- Small desserts
So don't think of the convenience store as simply a place to buy something before going somewhere else.
The convenience store can be part of the Korean travel experience itself.
And before you start exploring Seoul, make sure you know how to use public transportation. My guide to the T-money card can help you get started.

🌃 5. Stay Until Seoul Lights Up
One of my favorite things about the Han River is watching the city transition from day to night.
At first, you're looking at a river surrounded by parks and buildings.
Then the sun disappears.
The bridges light up.
The buildings begin to glow.
Cars move across the bridges.
People gather along the river.
And Seoul starts to sparkle.
This is when I think the Han River becomes most beautiful.
📸 6. Don't Just Take the Famous Photo
Of course, you'll probably want to take photos.
That's part of traveling.
But here's my advice:
Put your phone down for a few minutes.
Look at the river.
Watch people cycling.
Listen to the city.
Feel the wind.
Take a photo after you've actually experienced the moment.
Sometimes the best travel memory isn't the photo.
It's what happened before you took it.
🌙 JAY's Perfect Han River Evening
If I were showing a friend from overseas around Seoul, this is how I'd spend the evening:
5:00 PM
Arrive at the Han River.
5:30 PM
Walk around the park.
6:00 PM
Rent a bicycle or find a nice place to sit.
Sunset
Watch the sunset over Seoul.
After sunset
Go to a convenience store.
7:30 PM
Make instant ramyeon.
Add cheese.
Get some kimchi.
8:00 PM
Eat ramyeon beside the river.
8:30 PM
Walk around and enjoy the night view.
No expensive dinner.
No complicated schedule.
Just Seoul.
⭐ JAY's Final Tip
If you're visiting Seoul for the first time, don't think you need to visit the Han River only because it's a famous tourist attraction.
Go because this is where you can see how ordinary life in Seoul works.
People come here after work.
Students meet their friends.
Families spend their weekends here.
Couples have picnics.
People exercise.
And someone is probably sitting somewhere eating ramyeon while looking at the river.
That's what makes the Han River special.
It's not just a tourist attraction.
It's part of everyday Seoul.
And if you want to experience Seoul beyond the famous landmarks...
this is a good place to start.
