Gyeongbokgung Palace Night Viewing 2026: Tickets, Hanbok Entry & Foreigner Guide

Gyeongbokgung Palace Night Viewing 2026 with illuminated traditional palace buildings in Seoul

Gyeongbokgung Palace Night Viewing 2026 returns this fall, giving visitors a limited chance to explore Korea’s most famous royal palace after sunset.

From illuminated palace halls to the reflection of Gyeonghoeru Pavilion at night, the experience feels very different from a normal daytime visit.

But ticket rules are different for online buyers, foreign visitors, and people wearing hanbok. There is also a new heritage-protection restriction beginning on the exact day the 2026 autumn night-viewing season opens.

This guide explains what foreign visitors actually need to know before going.

Before visiting, check the official 2026 Gyeongbokgung Night Viewing notice again for any last-minute operational changes.

Night viewing is unavailable every Monday and Tuesday. The palace opens for night visitors from 7:00 PM until 9:30 PM, and the final admission is at 8:30 PM.

The standard ticket costs only ₩3,000, so price is not really the difficult part.

Getting the right ticket is.

What Areas of Gyeongbokgung Are Open at Night?

The official night-viewing route includes major parts of Gyeongbokgung such as Gwanghwamun Gate, Heungnyemun Gate, Geunjeongjeon Hall, Gyeonghoeru Pavilion, Sajeongjeon Hall, Gangnyeongjeon Hall, Gyotaejeon Hall and the Amisan area.

For many travelers, Gyeonghoeru Pavilion after dark is one of the strongest reasons to choose the night session instead of visiting only during the daytime.

There is, however, an important new 2026 restriction around Geunjeongjeon that older Seoul travel guides may not mention.

I’ll explain that below.

How to Book Gyeongbokgung Night Viewing Tickets in 2026

Foreign visitors checking Gyeongbokgung night viewing tickets before entering the palace

There are three practical ways to enter:

online reservation, foreigner-only same-day tickets, or qualifying for free admission.

Understanding the difference can save you from arriving at the palace with the wrong plan.

Option 1: Book Online Through NOL Ticket

The official online booking service for the 2026 autumn season is NOL Ticket.

Check current availability through the official Gyeongbokgung Night Viewing ticket page on NOL.

Online reservations opened on August 26 at 10:00 AM, with 3,000 online tickets available per night, subject to remaining inventory.

One important rule is that you cannot wait until the day of your visit to book online.

Online reservations are available only until 11:59 PM on the day before your scheduled visit.

Same-day online booking is not available.

According to the official guidance, cancellations eligible for a refund are also limited to 5:00 PM on the previous day.

There is another rule that is easy to miss.

To discourage excessive purchasing and resale, the official notice limits online purchases to four tickets per booking ID across the entire night-viewing season.

That means four tickets total for the season, not four tickets every night.

After booking, visitors can use their mobile ticket or follow the ticket-collection instructions provided with the reservation.

If several people are included under one reservation, plan to enter together.

Option 2: Foreign Visitors Can Buy Same-Day Tickets at the Palace

This is one of the most useful rules for international visitors.

Gyeongbokgung reserves 300 same-day tickets per night specifically for foreign visitors.

Each eligible visitor can purchase up to two tickets.

You should bring your passport or another accepted form of identification proving foreign status.

This makes the foreigner allocation useful if online booking is inconvenient or already sold out.

However, do not confuse “tickets are available for foreigners” with “a ticket is guaranteed.”

There are only 300 same-day foreigner tickets each night.

If Gyeongbokgung night viewing is one of the main reasons for your Seoul trip, online booking is still the lower-risk option when tickets are available.

Foreign visitors wearing qualifying hanbok for free entry to Gyeongbokgung Palace at night

Option 3: Wear Proper Hanbok and Enter Free

Yes.

Foreign visitors wearing qualifying hanbok can enter Gyeongbokgung Palace for free during the night-viewing season.

Qualifying free-admission visitors do not need the standard advance night-viewing reservation.

But the key word is qualifying.

Wearing one Korean-style accessory or a single hanbok-inspired item does not automatically count.

Check the official Gyeongbokgung Hanbok Free Admission Guidelines before your visit.

Both traditional hanbok and some modern daily-hanbok styles can qualify, but the outfit generally needs the proper combination of an upper hanbok garment and corresponding skirt or pants.

For example, combining a jeogori with ordinary jeans does not qualify. A normal T-shirt paired with a hanbok skirt or pants does not qualify either.

The free-hanbok admission policy applies to foreign visitors as well as Korean visitors.

If you rent hanbok near Gyeongbokgung, tell the rental shop that you want the outfit to qualify for palace free admission and confirm that the complete outfit meets the official guideline.

Important 2026 Change: Geunjeongjeon Woldae Access Is Restricted

Visitors viewing illuminated Geunjeongjeon Hall from outside the Woldae platform at night in 2026

This information was announced on August 30, 2026, so many older travel articles will not include it.

From September 2 through October 31, 2026, visitors are not permitted to enter the historic Woldae stone platform in front of Geunjeongjeon Hall.

The restriction is intended to protect the historic stone structures from damage during a period of heavy visitor traffic.

You can check the official Korea Heritage Service restriction notice.

This does not mean Geunjeongjeon is removed from the night-viewing experience.

The restriction specifically concerns visitors stepping onto the historic stone Woldae platform.

You can still see and photograph the illuminated hall from permitted visitor areas.

For practical planning, this means:

do not build your 2026 night-photo plan around standing on the Geunjeongjeon stone platform.

How to Get to Gyeongbokgung Palace

The official palace address is:

161 Sajik-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul

For most travelers, the easiest subway route is:

Gyeongbokgung Station — Seoul Subway Line 3 — Exit 5

The palace lists the walk from Exit 5 at roughly two minutes.

Other possible approaches include Anguk Station Exit 1 and Gwanghwamun Station Exit 2, both of which are within walking distance of the palace area.

If you are not yet comfortable using Seoul public transportation, read JAY’s guide to using the Seoul subway before your visit.

What Time Should You Arrive?

Do not use the 8:30 PM last-entry time as your target arrival time.

That is the deadline, not the ideal arrival time.

The palace closes at 9:30 PM, so entering shortly before 8:30 PM leaves relatively little time to walk through the night-viewing areas, stop for photos and enjoy the lighting.

For most first-time visitors, arriving around the beginning of the evening session is much more comfortable.

Give yourself additional time if you need to:

  • collect a reserved ticket
  • buy a foreigner same-day ticket
  • verify free-admission eligibility
  • rent or change into hanbok
  • take photos around Gwanghwamun before entering

Is Gyeongbokgung Better at Night or During the Day?

They are different experiences.

Daytime is better if your priority is architecture, historical detail and seeing a larger part of the palace complex in natural light.

Night viewing is better if your priority is atmosphere.

Illuminated palace halls, dark courtyards and reflections around Gyeonghoeru create a side of Gyeongbokgung that ordinary daytime visitors do not experience.

If this is your first trip to Seoul and you have enough time, I would not necessarily treat the night opening as a complete substitute for every daytime palace experience.

Think of it as a limited seasonal experience.

If you are still choosing which neighborhood to use as your Seoul base, read JAY’s Where to Stay in Seoul 2026 guide.

What Happens If It Rains?

Gyeongbokgung night viewing is primarily an outdoor experience and normally continues during ordinary rain.

The official visitor guidance recommends preparing appropriate rain protection when necessary.

Because palace grounds can also be quite dark at night, walk carefully on wet or uneven surfaces.

Do not automatically assume that rain means the event is cancelled.

If Seoul is experiencing severe weather, check the official palace notice again before leaving your accommodation.

Gyeongbokgung Palace Night Viewing 2026 FAQ

When is Gyeongbokgung Palace Night Viewing in fall 2026?

The autumn night-viewing season runs from September 2 through October 2, 2026, except every Monday and Tuesday.

What time does Gyeongbokgung open at night?

Night admission operates from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM.

The final entry is at 8:30 PM.

How much does Gyeongbokgung night viewing cost?

The standard ticket costs ₩3,000.

Can foreigners buy Gyeongbokgung night tickets at the gate?

Yes.

The 2026 program allocates 300 same-day tickets per night specifically for foreign visitors.

Each eligible visitor can buy up to two tickets.

Bring your passport or another accepted form of identification.

Can I buy an online ticket on the same day?

No.

Online booking closes at 11:59 PM on the day before your visit.

If you have no online reservation on the day itself, eligible foreign visitors can instead try the limited foreigner same-day allocation.

Is Gyeongbokgung free if I wear hanbok?

Yes, including for foreign visitors, provided the outfit meets the official hanbok admission guidelines.

Do not assume every Korean-inspired outfit qualifies.

Use the official hanbok guideline if you are unsure.

Do hanbok visitors need an advance night-viewing reservation?

Qualifying free-admission visitors do not need the standard advance reservation for the 2026 night-viewing program.

Are young children or senior visitors eligible for free admission?

Certain age-based free-admission categories also apply.

If your exemption depends on age or another status, carry identification that can verify eligibility.

Can I stand on the Geunjeongjeon stone platform?

Not during the 2026 autumn period.

Access to the historic Geunjeongjeon Woldae is restricted from September 2 through October 31, 2026.

You can still view Geunjeongjeon from the permitted visitor areas.

What Should You Do After Gyeongbokgung?

Because the night viewing finishes at 9:30 PM, you do not necessarily need to end your Seoul evening there.

Gwanghwamun is immediately outside the palace area, while Jongno and parts of Insadong are also convenient for continuing the night.

If you want to plan a longer evening, use JAY’s Seoul at Night guide to decide whether to stay around central Seoul or continue to another neighborhood.

If Gyeongbokgung is just one stop in a longer Korea itinerary, JAY’s 7 Days in South Korea itinerary can help you avoid packing too many attractions into the same day.

JAY’s Take

For foreign travelers, Gyeongbokgung Palace Night Viewing 2026 offers unusually strong value for a major Seoul attraction.

The standard ticket costs only ₩3,000.

Foreign visitors have a dedicated same-day ticket allocation.

And visitors wearing qualifying hanbok can enter free.

The mistake I would avoid is arriving with no plan simply because you heard that foreigners can buy tickets at the palace.

They can.

But the allocation is limited.

If this experience matters to your trip, reserve online when possible.

If online tickets are unavailable, understand the foreigner same-day ticket rules before going.

If you want to wear hanbok, make sure your full outfit actually meets the official free-admission guideline.

And remember the 2026 detail many older guides will miss:

you can still see illuminated Geunjeongjeon, but visitors cannot step onto its historic Woldae stone platform during the autumn night-viewing season.

That is exactly why checking the official information shortly before your visit matters.
